The space will be divided into 3 areas, each with different activities, including a front space of unpredictable print, daytime danger in the form of the radlab explorations in the centre space, and evening performances and talks in the Salon space accompanied by visual infestation. A programme of short experimental films will be shown in the microplex, the world's smallest cinema, to be outdone by Bill Thompson's Picoplex, a one-person cinema in a portable hood. Next door, the Maurice Einhard Neu Gallery will house both a Bare Bones daily print record, and the video anarchy of The Knocking Shop. Further down Redchurch Street is the Aubin Gallery and Cinema who will host the first UK show and video-work by the radical French illustration group Bazooka. Idea Generation's gallery will house a group show of epic failure curated by Stuart Semple and Harry Malt. In the Payne Shurvell gallery, 4by4 is four experimental shows being held over four weeks. The festival kicks off on September 2 with the outstanding Yuri Suzuki at KK Outlet gallery in nearby Hoxton Square. Cupcakes curated by Stuart Semple(!) apart from the talks programme being planned for September 24th, all events in the ADF are free еееееееееееееееееееееееееееееееееееееееееееееееееееееееееееееееееееееееееееееееееееееееееееееееееееее RADLAB @ Londonewcastle Project Space 28 Redchurch Street The daytime laboratory Inside the main Londonewcastle Project space is a dedicated radlab laboratory of experimental adventures. Each day there will be a different activity, led by an industry professional plus specially invited guests. Outcome is not guaranteed, but thought-provoking process is. Engagement assured, come and intervene. From 11am to 5pm every day. Lab leaders: Daniel Charny Curator for the Aram Gallery, curator for the permanent collection of the Design Musem and lecturer on Product and Furniture at the RCA Sarah Temple Course leader and event producer at LCC Jon Wozencroft Joint editor of Fuse, the experimental type venture, joint owner of Touch and currently head of Moving Image at the RCA Cecilia Wee Senior Producer at Sound and Music, curator of Late at Tate Britain (April 2010), co-Director of Rational Rec and presenter of arts documentaries on Resonance FM Yomi Ayeni Transmedia strategist, filmmaker, associate lecturer at LCC. Media liaison for Burning Man Festival _____________________________________________________________________________________________________ radlab daytime programme from 11am to 5pm: In the radlab: Saturday 18 September, Sunday 19 September, Monday 20 September, Tuesday 21 September Mistakes and Manifestos [ M&M! ] curated by Daniel Charny Over the first four days of the festival, Mistakes and Manifestos, curated by Daniel Charny, echoes the ADF call to shake off bad habits, to refresh and engage, be awake and active. Presenting a series of works and activities pulled together to excite conversation, the [ M&M! ] space is an invitation to think, make and talk about design. Manifestos are calls to action, inciting response, setting principles and direction, responding to the past and conceiving the future, proudly declared and highly desirable to those who create them. They are briefs. Mistakes on the other hand are unwanted results. Together they hold the creative process from opposing sides. Both, undeniably, are sources for new creative directions. And like parentheses they contain only the sides. Running for the first four days of the ADF, the [ M&M! ] space will be an open programme of selected exhibits and some scheduled events. Among these will be Performance artist Giles Ripley's self help film I'm a Winner (Why Aren't You!!!); Social interventions designer Hwang Kim's short film series Star Pizza; To see these, read manifestos or sample the Fabrats quickly made prototypes, people will be able to sit on Cut up Benches by David Amar; Material and gesture experiments Archive by Maker Therese Morch; Speed Creating, an ambitious project by designer Dominic Wilcox; Talk by anti designer Jerszy Seymour A New World Adventurers Guide; this and other manifesto readings will be megaphoned from a new take on the speakers corner by designer Alon Meron. A manifesto wall, Open Spike, by designer Martino Gamper will accumulatively display both commissioned and open submission manifestos, and will be vying for attention with The Fabrats, led by Stu Bannocks, who will be making low tech rapid prototypes to test out the ideas. Guesting Master Makers setting agendas such as Matt Jones of Berg and surprise manifesto readers will be taking part along the days. At best we expect [ M&M! ] to be a lively scene of investigation offering new directions, in the least an alternative to well rehearsed design and at worst another trendy hyped up London show. _____________________________________________________________________________________________________ In the radlab: Wednesday 22 September Point of Transition curated by recent graduates from LCC and Sarah Temple A day of interventions, open discussions and participatory production hosted and curated by recent graduates from the London College of Communication. An opportunity for the audience to explore the relationship between academic and professional life and the role and responsibility of designers, featuring contributions by Jonathan Barnbrook, Liz McQuiston, Alex Cooper, James Allen, Calverts Press, and Martin Bright of New Deal of the Mind. _____________________________________________________________________________________________________ In the radlab: Thursday 23 September Painting on Film RCA students & New Deal of the Mind participants curated by Jon Wozencroft Every year the film-making course, Acoustic Images, at the Royal College of Art's Communication Art and Design department, undertake an exercise - Painting on Film. The idea is to make a moving image sequence without recourse to the camera or indeed any technology beyond one's own imagination and resourcefulness - using the grammar of film, 24 frames a second, to paint/draw/etch markings onto 16mm celluloid film, one frame at a time. Time bends. There are various ways to do it. All will be explained about the practice, but it's up to the participants to provide the vision. For this session, 10 students/graduates from Acoustic Images at the RCA will interact with 10 initiates from New Deal for the New Mind, an organisation set up to help ex-offenders/not-so-lucky young people, to find their way back to a more creative way of thinking and being. The RCA students will show how to set about using this method - letraset, felt-tip fens and sharp edges amongst other agents all make significant marks on a film=frame - and at the same time both sets of participants will set into motion a documentary of the day. Goodness knows what that will be. Nicky Hamlyn, Jennifer Nightingale and Jon Wozencroft will (un)direct the course of events. Between them they have at least 50 years teaching experience which will not prepare them for an occasion like this. _____________________________________________________________________________________________________ In the radlab: Friday 24 September Talks programme Speakers (TBC) The ADF talks programme will be a day-long session by key contributors to the ADF to discuss the main themes of the festival. Entry fee and final list of speakers to be confirmed _____________________________________________________________________________________________________ In the radlab: Saturday 25 September OCD Yomi Ayeni Yomi Ayeni will lead this installation as a narrative of actions, reactions, and interactions between people, objects, spoken word, film and across multiple platforms. OCD (Obsessive Classification Disorder) will act as a disruption on the everyday and the habitual, asking us to question choices and nudging us towards a declassified response. Obsessive Classification Disorder is a transmedia intervention exploring the power of symbols within communication, and societyтАЩs acceptance of pre-packaged terminology. Participants are given a set of symbols, and asked to abandon everything they know about words or meaning, and reconnect with the intuitive basis of language and the gut instinct behind semantics, interaction and communication. This transmedia project takes place on two interchangeable platforms: online and real world. Participants are encouraged to document their reactions and experiences in one or all the following mediums - live performance, blogging, film, photography, audio, text, and graphics. OCD sets out to declassify our world. Breathe life into symbols and let the symbols control you. This is a chance to engage on an intuitive level. _____________________________________________________________________________________________________ In the radlab: Sunday 26 September Anarchy / Apathy Research Studios Are we anarchic? Are we apathetic? What do either of these states mean to us? Research Studios will be exploring the relevance of Anarchy and Apathy in everyday life, through real-time interactive information processing. The space will feature visual outputs, alongside other designersт and image makersт explorations of the subject. еееееееееееееееееееееееееееееееееееееееееееееееееееееееееееееееееееееееееееееееееееееееееееееееееееее In the Radlab space during evening performances Spacemen: Monsters Illustration Collective Interactive installation еееееееееееееееееееееееееееееееееееееееееееееееееееееееееееееееееееееееееееееееееееееееееееееееееееее FRONT SPACE @ Londonewcastle Project Space 28 Redchurch Street E2 The first room in the main space contains printed unprediction from many contributors and open sub-mission, including Jake Tilson, Stefan Sagmeister, Jonathan Barnbrook. We are living in an age where millions of colours became 256. Difference is the enemy. Generic culture hypnotises us all into generic patterns, where control is visibly invisible. Danger is replaced by fear. New means upgrade. Risk is obsolete. Art made money stupid, and money made us fools. We welcome no_use, no_function and no_fear. Anarchy, crash and burn, the new awaits. From Learning to Earning, and now to Yearning, we have forgotten why we are here. We have lost touch with what made us tick, the fire of creative possibility that once consumed us from within. Revolutionary thought is but a distant memory. I grew up as part of a generation that thought it could help improve society; that our sole function was to be conscious and to spread that consciousness through creative awareness, exploration, observation and questioning. This generation was replaced by the Thatcher/Reagan paradigm of Culture=Money. Thinkers became earners, Creatives became entertainers, and a whole dumbed-down generation now feels entitled to success and profit without having to work or think too much. We are now left with a spiritual hollowness. The belief systems of consumption and commodity have been exposed as empty. Revolution is a distant echo lost in the white noise, and religion has been largely subsumed by globalisation. Virtual experiences have replaced human touch. Analogue culture is now the exotic. We have managed to create for our children, perhaps for the first time in history, a future which is less hopeful than the one we live in today. Deep Freeze The house of credit cards has now collapsed. For 25 years we have been in a state of Deep Freeze. We have somehow denied ourselves permission to remember what it was like before the Big Bang of banking deregulation. Schools became businesses and hospitals became profit centres. Art for artтАЩs sake was sacrificed for entertainment and bums on seats. Ideas became clich├лs and anything different was viewed with suspicion and disdain. We have traded Freedom for Peace. What we need is Liberation. Free Me from Freedom As the Lehman Brothers collapsed, so a new era is signalled and the baton is passed on again. Mankind has the opportunity now to reclaim the cultural high-ground and risk something new, a creative breach in the barrier of exclusion that can allow some real growth and evolution, like a bright light shining through the cracks of a crumbling wall. The line of Dangerous Ideas had been interrupted and the path can be found again. (dangerous ideas) When was the last time you encountered any culture that you can say was really dangerous, that actually challenged anything? еееееееееееееееееееееееееееееееееееееееееееееееееееееееееееееееееееееееееееееееееееееееееееееееееееее www.antidesignfestival.com Join our facebook group anti-design festival twitter at ADF_10v еееееееееееееееееееееееееееееееееееееееееееееееееееееееееееееееееееееееееееееееееееееееееееееееееееее Hope to see you there!
